What theme

How It Works?

In standard WordPress development the theme information will be stored in the theme's style.css file, there will be comments at the top of the file which tells WordPress all about the current theme.

The What Theme tool will take the URL given to it and search the site for all the stylesheets. As it follows the WordPress guidelines it will search for a style.css file within the themes directory and check the comments at the top of the file.

If the above structure is in the CSS file comments then we can discover what theme the website is using.

The What Theme tool will then extract all this information and display it to you on the page.

Can Not Get Theme Information?

There are a few occasions where the What Theme tool can not get the theme information, the reason why it might not be able to get the theme information are:

  1. The site is not a WordPress site
  2. The server is declining access to the files from a third party
  3. The site is using a WordPress minifier plugin that removes the comments from the theme stylesheet
  4. The site is not following WordPress guidelines and have removed the comments from the stylesheet
